I wrote these poems following the death of my best friend during Covid lockdown where those two catastrophes intertwined. We all became captives in a sense, though hers was a function of not only the pandemic, but also terminal illness. I hope the poems express both the suffocation of that period, as well as a reverence for life fully lived, which she had, and which those experiences placed into new perspective for me.
Graceful and beguiling, Elegies of Herons distills hope from nature in Wetzel's luminous poetics of tristezza.
Meanwhile, the sun strokes the threads of the web
as if love and this, the start
of a long journey. I blow
softly on the web, watch the tiny things
tumble, watch them fly.
